How Big Was Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker’s $1.4 Million Win, Really? We Did The Math
The media fell all over themselves to cover his gambling haul, but the real story is in the numbers
2 min
Of all the gambling stories percolating across the country — and there are plenty, from the rise of prediction markets to the ongoing New York downstate casino war of attrition to Vegas tourism to whatever else is cooking — one big casino win managed to capture the nation’s (and apparently the world’s) attention.
CNN reported it. So did the BBC. Politico. NBC. FOX Business. CNBC. The New York Times. The Guardian. The Chicago Tribune. ABC. The Hill. USA Today. The Washington Post. The Daily Beast. The New York Post. People. Fortune. The Independent. The Wall Street Journal.
Probably even Highlights for Children. Anyone check the latest edition of Cat Fancy?
The story in question?
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker won $1.4 million in Las Vegas.
That’s it. That’s the whole thing.
A sampling of the breathless coverage:
“Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker turned heads this week when his campaign disclosed he won $1.4 million gambling last year.” — Politico
“Billionaire Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker raked it in big in 2024, including more than $1 million while gambling in Las Vegas.” — People
“Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker raked in a massive $1.4 million in gambling winnings last year.” — The Daily Beast
And sure, $1.4 million is a big number. If I won $1.4 million in Vegas, I’d be done. That’s it. I’d retire. Vanish. You’d find me six months later sitting at the end of the bar somewhere in Key Largo.
If you sense a “but” coming …
Theory of relativity
But not one story I read bothered to do the math. Pritzker is worth $3.7 billion. That’s billion with a “B,” good for 972nd on the Forbes list. There are 12 Pritzkers who are billionaires, by the way, which must make Thanksgiving a real pressure cooker. You’d better bring more than a bottle of Barefoot Pinot Grigio, know what I mean?
Anyway, I’m no math whiz, but $3.7 billion is, objectively, a lot of money. So how much did this big win really move the needle?
By my calculations, Pritzker increased his fortune by roughly 0.0378%. The needle wasn’t even made aware.
To put that in perspective: if your household net worth equals the national average — $1.06 million, per the Federal Reserve — your equivalent Vegas hot streak would net you about $400.
If your household sits at the median — $192,900 — congrats on your $72.57 jackpot. Don’t spend it all in one place, although Applebee’s does have that two-for-$25 deal.
So, yeah, Pritzker’s a whale. But all the gawking and pearl-clutching over his “massive win” is like Bob from down the street hitting a $75 scratch-off and it becoming front page news.
Congrats, Bob. Enjoy the mozzarella sticks.
But Pritzker is a politician, and so it’s important, right?
Nah. Let’s say you’re California Gov. Gavin Newsom. You’re pretty much the most talked-about Democrat when it comes to 2028. You’re also worth about $20 million, which would get not only the seat at the bar in Key Largo, but the bar itself. If you went to Vegas and hit it as big as Pritzker did, your equivalent “big win” would be a shade over eight grand. Not exactly BBC Breaking News material.
The moral of the story? Everything’s relative. The same $1.4 million that would change your life is practically nothing to Pritzker. Imagine having $100 to your name and seeing — literally — four pennies on the ground. That’s .004% of your net worth, just waiting to be scooped up. I’ll bet you the $100 you pass it on by.
The media called Pritzker’s win a fortune; for him, it’s an accounting error.
So next time you hear about a billionaire “raking it in,” remember: For the rest of us, it’s just Bob, scratching away at 7-Eleven, dreaming of Applebee’s.
