Good Blackjack, Minor-League Hockey, And Rain: A Gambling Trip To The Pacific Northwest

As much as I love hitting up my old standbys like Las Vegas, Reno, New Mexico, and Louisiana, where I’ve burned through more casino chips than I care to admit, I made a New Year’s resolution for 2026: Branch out and hit at least one brand-new spot every other trip.

Well, that resolution kicked off with a bang on my birthday weekend. I flew into Seattle, grabbed a rental, and cruised north into Vancouver for two of my favorite things: casinos and hockey.

Here’s how the Pacific Northwest adventure unfolded, stop by stop.

First stop: Quil Ceda Creek Casino

Heading north on I-5, the first casino you hit is Quil Ceda Creek, about an hour from Sea-Tac Airport. I rolled in under sunny skies, practically a miracle in the Pacific Northwest. The next morning? Classic gray drizzle, exactly as advertised.

I sat down at the lone open blackjack table and immediately spotted the giant warning sign: no players club card, one hand only, $100 max. I’d never seen anything like it. Clearly, this casino had been burned by card counters recently. Not me, though. I got absolutely demolished in record time. You can’t win them all, I guess!

Morning limits included $5 for 10x odds craps and double-zero roulette; $10 for 6-deck 3:2 blackjack, Free Bet blackjack, Spanish 21, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, and I Luv Suits; $15 Face Up Pai Gow; $25 for double-deck 3:2 blackjack.

Second stop: Tulalip Resort & Casino

Just eight minutes up the road sits the bigger, flashier, sister property Tulalip Resort & Casino. From the outside, it looked massive, but once I stepped inside, I realized I’d just signed up for a half-mile hike to the tables. Much of the casino floor was under renovation, so I navigated a maze of temporary walls before popping out into the shiny new wing.

I jumped into Bahama Bonus blackjack (same game as Spanish 21) and rode the wildest roller coaster: early beatdown, insane hot streak, then another cold snap. Still walked away $50 ahead and more than happy about it.

Limits on this Friday morning at Tulalip were $5 for 10x odds craps and double-zero roulette; $10 for Bahama Bonus blackjack, 8-deck 3:2 blackjack, 8-deck Free Bet blackjack, Four Card Poker, and I Luv Suits; $15 Face Up Pai Gow; $25 baccarat.

Normally, table games are in the center of the casino floor, right in the heart of the action. Here, the tables were tucked in a weird corner. I honestly thought for a minute they’d removed them until I finally found them.

Third stop: Angel of the Winds Casino Resort

Rain really started hammering as I continued north to Angel of the Winds in Arlington (see photo at top of article). I’d planned a quick stop … and ended up staying way longer, while I crushed my biggest win of the entire trip on Bahama Bonus blackjack.

New players club sign-ups received a unique perk: a free $10 straight bet at the sportsbook. I put it on Latvia to win its first Olympic men’s hockey game in over a decade — massive underdogs. I was shocked when the bet hit that evening! Should’ve gone bigger, but hey, free money is free money!

Despite not being the most imposing casino on the outside, the casino floor just keeps unfolding inside and they’d decked it out nicely for Lunar New Year.

Limits this afternoon were set at $5 for 10x odds craps; $10 I Luv Suits and UTH; $15 for 6-deck 3:2 blackjack, Bahama Bonus, and double-zero roulette; $25 baccarat.

Fourth stop: Swinomish Casino & Lodge

Anyone who knows me is aware that I’m a total sucker for low-limit casinos, and Swinomish Casino in Anacortes, Washington, delivered exactly that, located about 45 minutes northwest of Angel of the Winds.

They say the average winning blackjack hand is a total of around 18.5. Here it felt like I needed a 20 just to survive the dealer. Still, a perfectly timed double-double on Bahama Bonus blackjack pulled me out of the red and into the green.

What impressed me most? The low limits, paired with a surprisingly upscale floor and hotel. I would’ve planted myself there all evening, but I had a packed night of travel ahead. The sun was setting over the Pacific (behind the clouds, of course) and the weekend crowd rolling in made it even better.

Evening limits at Swinomish were $3 for 2x Roll-to-Win craps; $5 for 6-deck 3:2 blackjack, Bahama Bonus blackjack, double-zero roulette, UTH, and I Luv Suits; $10 Fortune Pai Gow Poker.

      Fifth stop: Nooksack Northwood Casino

The one I was most excited about turned out to be the smallest and most remote: Nooksack Northwood. I’m pretty sure it’s the northernmost casino in the United States, just a mile or so from the Canadian border.

I had a tough decision to make: Players Edge 21 (another Spanish 21 cousin) or one of the last $5 pitched 3:2 blackjack tables in existence. I rode the hot hand on Players Edge 21. The place had that perfect small-town, everyone-knows-everyone vibe. Though they were all very friendly, and the locals at my table seemed surprised as to why I was even there — of all places.

The double-double that saved me at Swinomish betrayed me here and chewed into my profits, but I still escaped with a small win. Nooksack Northwood was the smallest casino I’d visited that day, but one of the busiest.

Friday night limits here included $5 for double-deck 3:2 blackjack, Players Edge 21, and Heads Up Hold’em; $10 Face Up Pai Gow Poker.

Sixth stop: Silver Reef Casino Resort

I pulled into Silver Reef right as the clock hit midnight, meaning it was now officially my birthday. A quick win on Players Edge 21 felt like the universe’s perfect gift!

The place was still hopping on Friday night into Saturday morning. Only a couple of tables had closed; the rest were packed. A smaller casino floor than the resort size suggested, it still had everything I needed, including low-limit pitched blackjack. After the smoky haze at Nooksack, breathing easy at a non-smoking joint felt like pure luxury.

Limits on a Friday night/Saturday morning here were $5 for 10x odds craps and Jackpot Hold’em; $10 for 6-deck 3:2 blackjack, 6-deck 3:2 Free Bet blackjack, double-deck 3:2 blackjack, Players Edge 21, UTH, Face Up Pai Gow, and double-zero roulette.

After cashing out on the casino floor, I checked into my Silver Reef hotel room. Although there was nothing special about it, the room was nice overall, despite some wear and tear to the bathroom. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to spend too much time in there that evening anyway. It was well worth $150 on the Friday before Valentine’s Day.

Seventh stop: River Rock Casino Resort

I crossed into British Columbia and immediately realized I left my luck stateside. River Rock’s casino floor looked gorgeous … but the table conditions were rough. Every blackjack game used a continuous shuffler (my personal nemesis) and a lot of stadium-style setups, and the only semblance of blackjack available was Free Bet, a game I despise.

With the goal of playing at every casino I visited on the trip, I acquiesced and sat down at the Free Bet table. My opinion of it was proven right. I lost my plastic Canadian dollars quickly!

Saturday morning limits were $10 for UTH and double-zero roulette; $15 for 3:2 blackjack (continuous shuffler) and baccarat. There were also $5 Mississippi Stud, $15 Four Card Poker, $25 8-deck 3:2 blackjack and Face Up Pai Gow Poker, and $50 double-deck 3:2 blackjack tables not open during my visit.

      Eighth stop: Great Canadian Casino-Vancouver

Great Canadian Casino-Vancouver’s name is slightly misleading; it’s not actually operating in Vancouver, but Coquitlam, B.C. I sat at third base at the blackjack table, which meant my decisions literally decided the table’s fate. Turns out I’m still the greatest blackjack player of all-time (at least for one session), because we won more than we lost and I clawed back some of what River Rock took.

A quick lunch at the Chinese spot in the food court, then some Olympic hockey on TV, and I was gone. Great Canadian Casino is a cool-looking property, although most of the exterior is just a massive parking garage.

Early afternoon limits here were $5 Mississippi Stud and 3:2 blackjack (continuous shuffler); $10 continuous shuffler 3:2 Free Bet blackjack; $10 UTH and baccarat; $20 double-zero roulette; $25 Fortune Pai Gow and double-deck 3:2 blackjack.

      Ninth stop: Grand Villa Casino

The NHL was on Olympic break, so I caught the Abbotsford Canucks (Vancouver’s AHL squad) in town. After the game, I wrapped up my Pacific Northwest adventure at Grand Villa Casino.

I spent the first four hours getting absolutely torched … then caught the hottest streak of the entire trip and clawed everything back, plus a crisp $10 profit. After the swing I’d just survived, that $10 felt like $1,000. The cashier wasn’t able to do a currency exchange, so I left with a little extra Canadian cash for my next gambling trip north of the border!

Grand Villa was my favorite B.C. casino of the trip. It’s clean and smoke-free, and offered a cool two-level layout around a center bar with an out-facing window view of Vancouver’s skyline.

Limits at Grand Villa were set at $2 for double-zero roulette; $5 for continuously shuffled 3:2 blackjack; $10 Three Card Poker, Four Card Poker, and 5x odds craps; $15 UTH; $25 for Free Bet (continuous shuffler), double-deck 3:2 blackjack, Face Up Pai Gow, and baccarat.

      Why the Pacific Northwest delivers

I’m a creature of habit by nature, which is exactly why I think it’s important to mix things up and travel somewhere new every now and then. Washington and British Columbia had been on my list for years and they absolutely delivered.

Washington’s casino scene, in particular, exceeded expectations: Spanish 21, Players Edge 21, and Bahama Bonus tables everywhere at low limits, 10x odds on craps with $10 being the highest minimum I saw, and not a single triple-zero roulette wheel in sight. I only scratched the surface, but it was more than enough to make me a fan, and I’m already planning a return trip to check out the rest.

If you enjoy real blackjack, affordable craps, great scenery, and the chance to mix in some hockey along the way, the Pacific Northwest is well worth the trip.
