Eureka! Casino Gold At Last
Monthly review series continues with employee-owned casino-resort in Mesquite, Nevada
3 min
Every month, in addition to writing casino trip reports, the man behind the “Casino Collective” X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram pages is reviewing a particular property he’s been to, among a list 500 casinos long and counting …
Ever since I began traveling to Las Vegas to gamble, I’ve been especially drawn to the small towns outside the Las Vegas metro area. Laughlin originally piqued my interest, thanks to its no‑frills gaming and strong blackjack conditions, but over the past two years, that interest has shifted to Mesquite.
Mesquite, Nevada, is a quiet town located about 100 miles northeast of Las Vegas on I‑15, 40 miles from St. George, Utah. It’s home to three casinos, all of which I enjoy, but none more than Eureka Casino Resort.
Employee-owned, stakeholder service
Eureka traces its beginnings to March 2000, when it was rebranded from Rancho Mesquite, which originally opened on Feb. 14, 1997. In 2005, the property underwent a $33 million renovation that expanded the casino floor, added more gaming machines, introduced a new sportsbook and poker room, enhanced dining options, and revitalized the hotel.
In 2015, the casino’s original developer sold the property to its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Today, Eureka remains 100% employee‑owned. This unique structure creates a strong sense of pride and accountability among the staff, with each employee acting as a stakeholder committed to delivering an exceptional guest experience.
Friendly rules, low minimums
While the casino floor is of average size, around 40,000 square feet, the sheer variety of gaming options and amenities gives Eureka the feel of a true destination resort.
Eureka offers more than 1,000 slot machines, a William Hill sportsbook, and 11 live table games. Over the dozen or so visits I’ve made, the action has consistently been well balanced between slot play and the tables, which include blackjack, craps, roulette, High Card Flush, Heads Up Hold’em, and Face Up Pai Gow Poker.

If you’re looking for a refreshing alternative to the high limits and unfavorable rules common on the Las Vegas Strip, Eureka delivers. Craps features standard 5x odds, roulette is all double zero, and blackjack pays 3:2 at every table. Player‑friendly rules include doubling after splits, re‑splitting aces, and the ability to play two hands at double the table minimum.
During my most recent visit in December, table limits were set at $5 for Heads Up Hold’em, High Card Flush, and double‑zero roulette; $10 for six‑deck 3:2 blackjack, 5x craps, and Face Up Pai Gow Poker; and $15 for 3:2 blackjack dealt from a continuous shuffling machine.
Best steak, cocktail, bed, shower
One area where Eureka truly distinguishes itself from the other Mesquite casinos is dining. The quality of the restaurants matches the premium feel of the casino floor. Most notably, Gregory’s Mesquite Grill, the resort’s signature steakhouse, is one of the best steakhouses I’ve ever eaten at.

Additional options include a café that stays open late, a casual grill near the sportsbook, and a buffet that operates on Sundays for brunch and during special occasions.
Rounding out the gaming experience are two full‑service bars located on the casino floor, both featuring bartop video poker. My personal favorite, however, is the bar at Gregory’s Mesquite Grill, which serves — hands down — the best Old Fashioned I’ve ever had.
Eureka’s amenities extend well beyond gaming and dining. A well‑lit, roughly 250‑foot walk east of the casino leads to a four‑story hotel tower with 214 rooms and suites, among the nicest in Mesquite.
Before my December stay, several followers on X messaged me about how comfortable the beds were. I can now officially confirm those claims — I slept better here than I have in a long time.
Another small detail: You can see the television from the shower, an underrated feature that adds to the room experience.
In addition to the hotel, Eureka features a resort pool, a courtyard with ample seating, and a gift shop conveniently located on the casino floor.
Golfers will also find plenty to love. Eureka’s sales team can assist in arranging golf trips to any of Mesquite’s many highly regarded courses.

Nine-figure renovation
Eureka has demonstrated a consistent commitment to reinvesting in the property. Recently, the resort announced plans for a $100 million enhancement project, beginning with a complete overhaul of the casino floor, followed by a full resort revitalization in phase two.
Eureka will always have a fan in me. Despite its smaller size, it feels like a destination resort, one with a sense of community you rarely find at larger properties. The staff is outstanding, the gaming options are excellent, and the resort and restaurants are the best in town. Simply put, there’s everything to like about it.
If you’re seeking a relaxed alternative to Las Vegas as part of your Vegas vacation, look no further than the short drive up I‑15 to Eureka Casino Resort.
