Update: They’re live. Per a DraftKings statement:

“DraftKings has officially launched its online sportsbook in Washington D.C. In addition to generating meaningful tax revenue to the District of Columbia and local communities in the area, we are thrilled to be able to offer our engaging platform complete with responsible gaming safeguards that encourage responsible play. Thank you again to the entire D.C. Council for their support in expanding mobile sports betting in the nation’s capital, and to D.C. United for their collaborative efforts to further elevate fan engagement.”

DraftKings announced Tuesday its intention to launch its online sportsbook in Washington, D.C., pending licensure and regulatory approvals. The move marks another significant milestone for the Boston-based gaming giant, which will expand its footprint to 29 North American jurisdictions upon launch.

The company secured market access through a partnership with D.C. United, the Major League Soccer franchise. Interestingly, FanDuel holds a partnership with the same team.

DraftKings joins FanDuel, Caesars, and BetMGM in the burgeoning D.C. online sports betting market. FanDuel held a monopoly until Caesars and BetMGM joined earlier this month.

      DC slowly coming around

The market’s expansion has been a long and winding road. The DC Council approved a budget in June that would have allowed for multiple online sports betting operators. But Mayor Muriel Bowser did not sign the budget, sending it back to the council for changes. The delay caused a brief postponement of the initial launch dates for Caesars and BetMGM.

The expansion of online sports betting in D.C. is expected to generate significant economic benefits for the city. Tax revenue from sports betting operations will be used to fund various public services, such as education, infrastructure, and social programs. Additionally, the industry can create jobs in different sectors, including technology, customer service, and marketing.

However, the delay in budget approval highlights the complexities involved in integrating sports betting into a city’s economic framework. Questions arise about the allocation of resources, potential revenue generation, and the social impact of gambling. These considerations are crucial in ensuring that the introduction of sports betting is beneficial not only to the operators and sports franchises but also to the community at large.

      DraftKings’ aggressive expansion strategy

Already a market leader, DraftKings’ entry into the D.C. market is part of a broader strategy to establish a dominant position in the rapidly growing U.S. sports betting industry. The company has been aggressively pursuing market access in multiple states, leveraging its strong brand recognition, advanced technology platform, and deep pockets to gain a competitive advantage.

While the entry into the D.C. market presents significant opportunities for DraftKings, the company will also face challenges. Intense competition from established rivals, regulatory hurdles, and the potential for consumer protection issues are among the factors that could impact its success.

As DraftKings launches its services in D.C., it enters a market that is still navigating the fiscal intricacies of sports betting. The company’s success will depend on its ability to adapt to the unique regulatory and economic environment of the district, as well as its capacity to offer a compelling product that resonates with bettors.
