From the moment it opened its doors in April, and became the first New York City casino with table games, Resorts World NYC in Queens has been New York state’s top casino in terms of revenue.

No surprise there — the Genting property on what used to be Aqueduct Racetrack is the only full-fledged New York casino in a major population center, and its direct competitors, Metropolitan Park in Queens and a Bally’s casino in the Bronx, are not expected to arrive until 2030.

In the meantime, the data published by the New York State Gaming Commission provides a glimpse at how gambling action is progressing while Resorts World remains the only game in town. The latest weekly revenue report, dropped late last week, reveals revenue figures and table games “drop” (betting handle) both show positive trends — albeit at modest rather than exponential rates.

Here were the average weekly table games drop amounts for each of the four full months Resorts World NYC has been open (with the caveat that data for the week ending Aug. 30 is not available yet):

  • May: $41.6 million
  • June: $45.5 million
  • July: $47 million
  • August: $50.1 million

If we combine all the May and June figures into one average representing late spring, and we combine July and August into one average representing the heart of summer, we see an 11.5% increase in table games drop from the first two months to the last two months.

Slots not as hot

While table games play is on an upward trajectory, the numbers suggest it’s drawing some business away from slots play at Resorts World NYC.

The number of machines increased in late July when the casino opened a new slots venue in the casino, going from a max of 2,501 active machines to 3,918, but the gross gaming revenue (GGR) on slots didn’t rise much with it. Average weekly slots GGR for the five weeks prior to the addition of the new machines was $20.3 million; the average for the five weeks since has been $20.6 million. And slots GGR was over $21 million every week in May.

In terms of total GGR for the property, that number is, like table games drop, trending modestly upward. For weeks that ended in May or June, total GGR was over $30 million just twice in nine weeks. In July and August, it has been more than $30 million in seven of the eight weeks, with a high of $31.2 million the week ending Aug. 2.

For a point of comparison with other commercial casinos in the state of New York, the Resorts World Catskills property is averaging under $4 million in weekly GGR this year.
