The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) has released its June revenue report, revealing a significant uptick in the state’s gaming revenue over June 2023. This follows the strong results reported a month earlier.

The combined total revenue from all gaming forms and fantasy contests amounted to $471,983,421, marking a 7.15% increase compared to the previous June. The surge was concentrated particularly in iGaming and sports wagering, which both showed notable year-over-year increases.

The PGCB regulates several sources of gaming revenue, including slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests, and video gaming terminals (VGTs). Detailed reports for these categories are available on the PGCB’s website.

      iGaming revenue shines

Pennsylvania’s iGaming revenue totaled $160.6 million, an 18.6% increase from $135.4 million in June 2023.

This significant rise highlights the increasing popularity and acceptance of online gaming platforms among consumers. And the growth pattern figures to continue now that bet365 soft-launched in the state this week.

bet365 has thrived in Ohio, had mixed results elsewhere — it will be interesting to see if it can succeed as a relatively late entry in PA, as both a mobile sportsbook and an online casino:https://t.co/YH3uu4jUCN

The detailed data for iGaming revenue by operator or land-based partner is as follows (comparisons to the June 2023 results in parentheses):

      • Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course: $59,829,329 (+3.45%)
      • Valley Forge Casino Resort: $37,940,142 (+35.11%)
      • Rivers Casino Philadelphia: $30,623,672 (+13.43%)
      • Harrah’s Philadelphia: $8,984,879 (+50.98%)
      • Golden Nugget: $4,544,290 (data not available for June 2023)
      • Live! Casino Philadelphia: $4,190,094 (+7.73%)
      • Parx Casino: $4,124,607 (-11.97%)
      • Mount Airy Casino Resort: $3,754,394 (+6.05%)
      • Bally’s Pennsylvania: $3,497,578 (+678.02%)
      • Wind Creek Bethlehem: $2,123,239 (+16.74%)
      • Mohegan Pennsylvania: $1,019,156 (-53.39%)

      Slot machines and table games

While iGaming has surged, traditional gaming forms such as retail slot machines and table games are neither increasing nor decreasing much. June 2024’s revenue from retail slot machines was $200,973,707, a slight 0.29% decrease compared to $201,549,571 in June 2023. The number of slot machines in operation also decreased from 25,348 in June 2023 to 24,731 in June 2024.

Retail table games experienced a marginal revenue drop, with June 2024 figures at $76,074,660, down 0.17% from $76,204,262 in June 2023. These small declines indicate a stable yet slightly challenged market for traditional gaming avenues.

Sports wagering and video gaming terminals

Sports wagering has continued to gain momentum, with a total handle of $464.5 million in June 2024, representing a 24.48% increase from June 2023’s $373.1 million.

The taxable revenue for sports wagering also saw a significant rise, reaching $29.9 million, up 29.63% from $23.1 million in the previous year.

VGTs also showed growth, if only modestly. The total adjusted revenue for June was $3,443,964, marking a 1.52% increase from $3,392,483 in June 2023. By the end of June, all VGT operators had maximized their offerings with five machines at 74 qualified truck stop establishments, compared to 69 establishments last year.

The total tax revenue generated in Pennsylvania from all forms of gaming and fantasy contests in June 2024 was $198,021,772.
