As it continues to expand and attract more attention, the online casino industry in the U.S. reached another milestone this week. BetMGM announced the largest jackpot win in the history of legalized online casino gaming.

On Monday, a player in New Jersey secured a staggering $6.45 million jackpot while playing the Fruit Blaster slot game on BetMGM Casino.

The jackpot was won on a $200 bet, courtesy of BetMGM’s progressive jackpot network, “The Big One.” The network is part of a suite of in-house games developed by Entain, the British gaming giant that co-owns BetMGM alongside MGM Resorts International. The Big One jackpot pool is shared across several BetMGM platforms, including Borgata, Wheel of Fortune Casino, and Party Casino, all accessible to players in New Jersey.

Progressive jackpots like The Big One accumulate prize money over time as players across the platform place bets, with a portion of each wager contributing to the ever-growing pool. The $6.45 million jackpot, which continued to amass after reaching a record $4 million in late-February, continued to grow throughout the spring and summer.

In addition to the massive cash prize, BetMGM has promised the winner an exclusive stay at one of MGM Resorts’ luxury properties. This gesture is part of the casino operator’s tradition of offering an “elevated experience” to players who secure jackpots of $500,000 or more. Details of the winner’s identity remain confidential.

A growing trend in jackpot payouts

Following the record-breaking win, The Big One progressive jackpot has been reset, and stood at $1.2 million as of Tuesday.

The recent win is the latest in a series of significant jackpot payouts that highlight the rapid growth of the online casino industry in the U.S. BetMGM’s casino platforms awarded over $138 million in progressive jackpots in 2023, reflecting a 32% increase from the previous year. A substantial portion of these payouts originated from exclusive titles created by Entain, such as Bison Fury and MGM Grand Millions Megaways.

In April, an anonymous BetMGM player from Michigan won a $1 million jackpot on a modest 40-cent bet. The Michigan player secured the win while playing Bison Fury as part of the same progressive jackpot network, underscoring the potential for significant payouts from even the smallest of wagers.

In another notable win from this spring, a player in Pennsylvania struck gold with a $525,726 payout while playing MGM Grand Millions Megaways on Borgata Online on their lunch break.

As the U.S. online casino industry continues to expand, driven by increasing legalization and market penetration, the potential for even larger jackpots grows in tandem with it.
